The renowned Kanhangad Muslim Yatheemkhana ( Orphanage), situated in Northern part of Kerala, established in 1973 was formally inaugurated by Late C. Ahmed Kunhi Musliar, then Khazi, Chembarikka, on 14th April 1973. It was started with 14 boys who were orphans and destitute.
The main object of the Kanhangad Muslim Yatheemkhana is to look after the welfare of orphans and destitute and to make arrangements for their proper instruction including religious education. It also includes establishing Madrassas, Educational, Technical and Vocational Institutions for these orphans and to uplift them up as ideal citizens of the society.
On 13th May 1973, the first Committee of Yatheemkhana was formed with the following Office bearers :
In the beginning there was no land or accommodation of its own for the Yatheemkhana. For a few years, the inmates were accommodated in private buildings at Parappalli, Chithari and Athinhal. A great social activist and philanthropist Late Kallatra Abdul Khader Haji was very generous in donating 60 cents of land situated near Kanhangad Railway Station for Constructing a building for the Yatheemkhana and the Yatheemkhana was permanently shifted to the new building. When the inmates was increased, the existing building was not sufficient enough to accommodate all the boys comfortably, a new two storied building was constructed and on 10th March 1984, Janab. Ibrahim Sulaiman Sait then M.P. inaugurated the new orphanage building.
The present strength of inmates is 150. It includes both Orphans and Destitute. They are given free food, accommodation up to the Secondary level Education. Eligible students are given admission in courses like CUTTING & TAILORING, ELECTRONIC MECHANIC AND COMPUTER. By giving proper education including religious education these inmates become an asset to the Society and Nation. For the inmates stay, a convenient and comfortable Hostel has been built. Arrangements have been made for the inmates to develop their extra curricular activities like Sports and Games, Arts and Literature. In order to develop the reading habit of the inmates, a well equipped Library has been set up. A Madrassa, Arabic College, Industrial Training Center have been set up for the benefit of the Orphans. Wholesome food is given to the inmates for which spacious dining hall and Canteen have been provided.
On 9th July, 2000, Janab. U.K.Aboobacker Attakoya Thangal. Al-Bukhari Khazi, Kanhangad Samyuktha Muslim Jama-ath inaugurated the functioning of Girls Orphanage. To alleviate the sufferings of poor orphan girls in and around who are deprived of basic education, the Committee was prompted to buy a house and a piece of land nearby the existing building to open a Girls Orphanage.
In the Initial stage, 11 girls have been given admission. We expect that the intake of Orphan Girls can be increased when facilities for their accommodation is available.

SOURCE OF INCOME :
Muslim brothers in around Kanhangad and U.A.E have given considerable support for the growth and development of the Kanhangad Muslim Orphanage. But the number of inmates is increasing yearly for which additional fund has to be found.
